Opened in 1993 as the Corn Exchange, then later known as the Flax & Firkin and the Assembly, from April 2013 the pub was re-launched as the Corn Exchange.

In December 2016, there was another change, when after several months of closure, this establishment became 1842, a restaurant and bar (no longer selling real ale).
