A pub has stood on this site since the early 1700s, known variously as The Stocking, The Volunteer and the waggon & Horses. In more recent times it carried the name Tithebarn. Part of the Matthew Brown estate, the pub had not sold real ale for a number of years when it closed in February 2016 - the future is uncertain with development planned for the surrounding area.

August 2018 saw an announcement from the council that the former Tithebarn pub is planned to be part of a new City Centre Health Hub that is to be built the on land behind the Princes Buildings on Lancaster Road. This will take over the patch of land which leads onto Tithebarn Street, and the city council has confirmed the former Tithebarn pub would be part of the development. (source Blog Preston)
