Opened in June 2026, 1896 is situated on Hough Lane in the centre of town, next door but one to the Spurrier and opposite the Leyland Lion, offering plenty of variety to the pub scene in this area. The name commemorates the year Leyland Motors produced its first steam-powered vehicle and is a nod to the town's industrial history. It is a premium, small capacity cocktail bar aimed at mature clientele, also serving the Jeremy Clarkson range of keg beers, but no real ale is served.
